April 13, Thursday Luncheon Roundtable – 12:30 to 1:45 p.m.
Speaker is Matthew Skic, curator of exhibitions at the Museum of the American Revolution. His topic – The Forten Family: Telling the Story of Black Founders.
The story of free Black Philadelphian James Forten, his family, and his descendants is described and documented compellingly through the hundred years from 1776 to 1876 in the newest exhibit at the Museum of the American Revolution. “Black Founders: The Forten Family of Philadelphia” tells the story of James Forten’s service in the Revolutionary War, his entrepreneurial success, his family’s achievements, their contributions to the city and the nation, and their dedication to the abolition and voting rights movements. Matthew Skic will tell us the story of researching and developing the exhibition, highlighting connections made with Forten descendants and the excitement of finding rare documents and artifacts.
Matthew joined the curatorial staff at the Museum of the American Revolution in June 2016 after graduating from the Winterthur Program in American Material Culture at the University of Delaware. He has curated multiple award-winning exhibitions at the museum, including “Hamilton Was Here: Rising Up in Revolutionary Philadelphia” and “Cost of Revolution: The Life and Death of an Irish Soldier.”
