March 11, Thursday Luncheon Roundtable on Zoom – 12:30 to 1:45 p.m.
Speaker is Laurie Olin, one of America’s most distinguished landscape architects. His topic—Seeing France, Humble to Grand, based on and illustrated by works from his recent book, France Sketchbooks.
For centuries, artists and designers have recorded places, people, and life in travel sketchbooks. Over a period of 50 years, in watercolor or pen and ink, Laurie Olin recorded what attracted his designer’s eye in the cities, the countryside, streets and cafés, ancient ruins, and vineyards of France, taking the time to see things carefully. From humble to grand, he rendered Paris in its seasons, agriculture in Provence and Bordeaux, trees, dogs, fountains. His drawings were originally intended to express the pleasure of merely “being there,” as well as self-education. Those he selected for France Sketchbooks are accompanied by his notes and observations, with introductory remarks on the regions included: Paris, Haute Loire, Provence, Haute Provence, Normandy, Aquitaine, and Entre des Meures. While not intended to be a travel book, but rather a book about drawing and seeing, Laurie hopes that it comes as a welcome tonic of past pleasures for many and an invitation to look forward to future joys.
