Programs for Dec 1-31

FIC DECEMBER PROGRAMS

December 1, Thursday Luncheon Roundtable – 12:30 to 1:45 p.m.

Speaker is Drexel’s Provost Emeritus and Distinguished University Professor Mark Greenberg. His topicSoaring College Costs: Why So High?

Mark Greenberg kept close watch on costs in higher education over the past 40 years, seeing them rise faster on average than costs for consumers in any other financial sector, including healthcare. Excluding financial aid, a year in residence at Penn cost $4,113 in 1982. Today it’s almost $86,000. A year in residence at Drexel was $3,867 in 1982, and today is about $81,000. Those numbers are less startling when adjusted for inflation since the purchasing power of $4,000 in 1982 is about $12,500 today; however, they represent annual increases of about 6%, which is more than twice the overall inflation rate of about 2.8%. Mark will pinpoint three principal causes driving this dramatic price escalation and outline some of its pernicious effects, while also encouraging discussion of ideas for curtailing it.

Mark joined Drexel in 1979 as an assistant professor of English, and in 1995 was named director of the small honors program that became the Pennoni Honors College in 2002, thanks to a gift from a trustee. In 2008 he was appointed provost of the university. Since 2015 he has returned to teaching courses on Romantic poetry and on the university as an institution in crisis for the Honors College.
