Programs for Nov 1-30

FIC NOVEMBER PROGRAMS

November 3, Thursday Luncheon Roundtable – 12:30 to 1:45 p.m.

Speaker is Philadelphia historian George Boudreau. His topicTelling The Stories of Early American Women, based on the newly published book Women in George Washington’s World, which he co-edited with Charlene Boyer Lewis.

Women known to Washington emerged as strong actors during and after the Revolution. Boudreau will spotlight some of their diverse lives: plantation mistresses and enslaved workers, Loyalists and Patriots, poets and socialites—women who admired and memorialized him, who provided him love and solace, who frustrated him, and who worked for or against him—including notable Philadelphians. They acted not as spectators, and not usually on the battlefield or in government, but they affected the future of their families and even the nation.

George W. Boudreau is a cultural historian specializing in 18th-century Anglo-America, particularly in the history of Philadelphia and the work of Benjamin Franklin. He is now the Paideia Teaching Fellow at Penn and senior research associate at Penn’s McNeil Center for Early American Studies. His books include Women in George Washington’s World (University of Virginia Press, 2022) and Independence: A Guide to Historic Philadelphia (Westholme, 2012 hardcover and 2016 paperback). Boudreau was the founding editor of the journal Early American Studies and has received multiple research fellowships in 18th-century American history and culture, as well as six major grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities to educate teachers about Benjamin Franklin and the 18th century. In 2019, he received a six-month postdoctoral research fellowship at the George Washington Presidential Library at Mount Vernon. A former Hoosier, he holds a PhD from Indiana University.
